Arguing with a fanboy...

So, my “Avengers 2 Trailer” post got me into a fun little debate with a fanboy who lives all the way in Singapore! This is what I love... arguing with people that take my articles way too seriously. In retrospect, since he’s such a fan of comic book movies, I should have asked him what the Joker would have asked him:  “Why so serious?”

Anyway, I had fun with it so I thought I would share. To keep his identity safe, I will just post the transcript without his name and we will call him “Bob from Singapore.”

This was on a thread on Facebook about the trailer. I posted my article because I found it relevant to that particular thread. This is what went down...

Nolan (original post):  Not impressed. The movie may be good, but the trailer is not. Here's why [and I posted the link to my article].

Bob from Singapore:  Wow, you're just a whole can of fun, aren't you, Mr. Nitpick? Why don't you join Cinema Sins or something?

Nolan:  I just call it like I see it, bud.

Bob from Singapore:  Erm, no. Your tone was snarky and arrogant in the article, not to mention biased. There was nothing neutral about that article, nor fair for that matter.

Nolan:  I'm glad I got across the tone I was going for. But pardon me for wanting a trailer to tell me something about the film it is marketing. This trailer doesn't.

Bob from Singapore:  Uh huh. Pardon Marvel for setting the tone and atmosphere of the movie without spoiling anything. Not like your immature fanboy mockings would contribute to that in any way.

Nolan:  I wouldn't consider myself a fanboy. I did give the first film a B+ though. You can see the review below. [and I posted a link to my review of The Avengers]

Bob from Singapore:  Well, I just call it like I see it, "bud". You sounded very much like a raving, raging fanboy to me.

Nolan:  In the article about the trailer or the review of The Avengers? Because "fanboy" is not the tone I was going for. Sarcasm is what I was going for.

Bob from Singapore:  The article about the trailer, because that just sounds like every carbon copy of an Internet negative comment about the trailer that I've came across; inaccurate (evil for the sake of evil), nitpicky (c'mon Tony this isn't the end), and childishly unreasonable (Ultron is not only a supremely powerful super villain, but he can rap, too!). What, Marvel's done philosophy for the first time since how long and all you have to say is how stupid that sounds? Yeah, real swell, bud.

Nolan:  So I guess it's safe to say you didn't care for my jokes (the stuff about Ultron rapping and Stark saying it's the end)? I thought they were pretty funny.

Bob from Singapore:  In good humor, I'll admit they were pretty good... if you're into that sort of snark. I suppose that with the kind of reactions I've been seeing across the net, I didn't know how I should've felt towards your jokes, thus perhaps taking them more seriously than I should.  Still inaccurate about Ultron though, especially with the depths and potentials Whedon's prepared for him remaining unknown. Ultron also wasn't being evil for the sake of evil, though I guess that isn't saying much when you generalize/over-simplify Ultron's motivation in the comics.

Nolan:  I was simply reviewing the trailer. He may be a well developed villain in the film but in the trailer he seems like another addition to the long list of supervillains that want to take over the world because they can. Or just want people to suffer because they are evil.

Bob from Singapore:  True enough. Most of Marvel's villains hardly have anything worthy of matching up with The Joker or even Bane. Each Batman villain is like an icon of its own; it takes 10 Marvel villains to make an icon of its own. Disappointing, really. Marvel could've done better.

Nolan:  The villains in the recent X-Men prequels have been solid. It seems we have resolved our differences. You have your opinion and I have mine. I just tend to put a sarcastic spin on mine.

So, at least we ended on a harmonious note, I guess. And forgive the typos, I just copied and pasted straight from the comments.

I enjoy debating with folks who disagree with my reviews so, please feel free to comment on any of them if you disagree and we will discuss them. That’s the thing I love about this art form:  everyone likes different things. You have your opinion and I have mine. As long as nobody belittles anyone else because of their opinions, we can all enjoy discussing film together and not get feelings hurt.

That's it for now...
