Ariana Grande Lyrics...

Pop lyrics these days are awful. I think we can all agree on that. Some of the most ridiculous are featured in “Break Free,” a mega-hit byAriana Grande - a 21 year old that looks like she’s twelve. As a side note, if you can understand more than three words she sings in a row in any of her songs, please leave a comment telling me how you do that. I have AZLyrics.com to thank for clearing up the lyrics in this song for me.

Verse 1:

If you want it, take it
I should’ve said it before
Tried to hide it, fake it
I can’t pretend anymore

I am not sure what ”it” is referring to here. But, for now, we’ll say it’s her metaphorical heart. So apparently her heart is up for grabs and it has been for a little while but she was hiding that fact. She no longer wants to pretend that she is selective with whom she gives her heart to. Because she is just a sucker that falls in love with any guy off the street.

Pre-Chorus:

I only wanna die alive
Never by the hands of a broken heart
Don’t wanna hear you lie tonight
Now that I’ve become who I really are

I’m not sure how you can “die alive.” Maybe she means that she wants to make sure she’s alive right before she dies. If so, I think she’ll be able to accomplish that. She also will accomplish not dying “by the hands of a broken heart” because hearts don’t have hands. She may get a broken heart if she hears this guy lie to her tonight, though. But it’s okay because she’s become who she really are… yea. Not only should that “are” be “am” but she has always been who she really is because she has always been the same person (unless aliens abducted her or she got possessed by a demon or something… neither of which I am ruling out at this point).

Chorus:

This is the part when I say I don’t want ya
I’m stronger than I’ve been before
This is the part when I break free
‘Cause I can’t resist it no more

In the first verse she basically said anyone can “take it” but now she has realized the error of her ways and is going to break free of someone who accepted her “if you want it, take it” invitation because she’s stronger than she was before. What a great character arc! But, at the end, here, she says she “can’t resist it no more.” Ignoring the grammatical error (since she clearly doesn’t care about that), to what is “it” referring now? I thought “it” was this person she’s breaking free from… but she can’t resist it anymore? I’m confused!

Verse 2:

You were better, deeper
I was under your spell
Like a deadly fever, yeah, babe
On the highway to hell, yeah

So, here she ran out of words. I can tell by the addition of the “yeah, babe” and “yeah.” She has to fill those syllables somehow and I guess she ran out of highly original metaphors like “deadly fever” and “highway to hell.” All I can tell from this verse is that this guy was dangerous… and uh… well… nope, nothing else.

Pre-chorus:

I only wanna die alive
Never by the hands of a broken heart
Don’t wanna hear you lie tonight
Now that I’ve become who I really are

Thank goodness we got to hear that deep, though-provoking part again. And I’m not even going to type the chorus again. It’s too horrible.

Bridge:

Thought on your body
I came alive
It was lethal
It was fatal
In my dreams it felt so right
But I woke up every time

So maybe the “it” wasn’t her heart after all. Maybe it was more physical than that, you know, since she is thinking about “your body.” But how can she come alive if “it” was lethal and/or fatal? I would say she may not know what those words mean, but they are synonyms and she used both of them so I figure she has to have some sort of idea.

But, she clears up the entire song with the last two lines:  the whole thing was a dream. So in Ariana Grande’s dreams she is very indecisive about with whom she should fall in love and neither grammar nor logic matter. I see…

If you thought the lyrics were silly, then check out the even sillier music video which is complete with cheesy backstory in scrolling text like Star Wars, zero gravity, really bad CGI, boob rockets, lipstick that looks like a lightsaber, wild facial hair, very obvious Beats By Dre product placement, goofy looking aliens, and what I can only assume Miss Grande calls “dancing.” I’m not going to put a link because that would essentially be promoting the outrageous and asinine music video. You can look it up on Youtube if you are so inclined.

That’s it for now...
