Did you watch that little superhero movie from 2012 called The Avengers? Probably, because it made a little more than a billion dollars worldwide. That’s a lot of dough. Well, not surprisingly, Marvel is looking to cash in again with a sequel. The big news today is that the new trailer hit the internet earlier than expected and everyone is going nuts about how amazing it is. So, naturally, I had to check it out.
In case you didn’t know, trailers are supposed to do two things. First, give you an idea of what the movie is about and, secondly, entice you to see the film. The second part of that is irrelevant because people who will see the film would see it with or without watching a trailer. I seriously doubt anyone will see this trailer and be like “you know, it looks pretty good. Maybe I’ll check it out.” That’s especially true because, based on the trailer alone, this looks like an awful movie.
The plot seems to be that this all powerful machine wants to see people suffer and he talks a lot of smack to the superheroes who try to stop them. There are no character motivations, no real reason behind the bad guy, and the plot is so derivative of every superhero movie ever made that it looks boring. Yes, I said boring even though the trailer features explosions, gunfire, massive set pieces, spaceships, hand-to-hand combat, and more. If there is no plot, then all the awesome looking CGI in the world won’t keep you entertained... as long as you have a brain. The CGI does look good, though.
54 words are uttered in this trailer. Let’s take a look at them...
“I’m gonna show you something beautiful - everyone screaming for mercy. You want to protect the world but you don’t want it to change. You’re all puppets tangled in strings. Strings.” - Ultron
The bad guy, Ultron (which I only know because I am familiar with the franchise, not because it’s mentioned in the trailer), is simply evil for the sake of being evil. That’s a boring bad guy in my book. The first Avengers film suffered from a lame bad guy as well. He just wanted to take over the world because he could.
“It’s the end. The end of the path I started us on.” - Tony Stark
Come on, Tony... this isn’t the end. There will be at least one more film but probably a bunch more since every one of them rakes in literal tons of money.
“Nothing lasts forever” - Black Widow
I didn’t know Captain Obvious was part of the Avengers!
“Now I’m free. There are no strings on me.” - Ultron
Ultron is not only a supremely powerful super villain, but he can rap, too!
Since I started writing this post, the trailer has had 400,000 more views on YouTube. And you know some people are just watching it over and over... weirdos.
That’s it for now...
